Why wont my fire ignite.

We had this problem for about 2 yrs. We didn't use the fire at all then when tried to ignite it didn't light (gas running though & spark but no fire!) so last week we got the plumber over........& it lit. DH felt like a right idiot! We now make a point of lighting it every 2 days to burn off the dust.

I got some new coals through the post today & I removed the old ones, hoovered them & the fireplace & put them back with the old & new colas & works a treat & the fire is nicely spread.

Thanks for everyones reply. The fire lit first time with the aid of a match, so i will leave it on for half an hour and see if it does anything. Now, by the process of elimination i would point fault at the starter( spark) i guess. Paul

It is probably dirt blocking the primary air port on the ASD (pilot). The ASD or atmospheric sensing device is designed to cutoff the flame if the oxygen in the room becomes deleted. It could also be dirt in the injector. The effect of either of these problems is that the gas doesn't reach the spark. Get your fire serviced.
It's amazing how people often have their boiler serviced but completely forget their gas fire. In most cases the boiler isn't going to kill you but a gas fire is an open flued appliance and definitely can. Dirt and fluff problems are exacerbated by wood of laminate floors. The dirt rolls across the floor straight into the fire, this would be normally be trapped by a carpet. I recommend you have your fire serviced annually. Don't take risks. CO kills.
