Hey,

Im about to start uni on the 29th to do my degree in adult nursing..

I was wondering if anyone knew of any help available with rent? ive been to housing benefit office but couldnt get an appointment till FEB!

Jst wondering if anyone had prev experience of this situation.

I get my bursary (inc dependant allowance/lone parent) total £803 per mnth but my rents £400

  • lone parents are entitled to claim housing benefit, but your bursary will be taken into account as income. The students union advice centre at your uni will be able to do you a calculation and help you make a claim.
"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."

I think you can get half the student loan too, I can. if you have no one to advise you now, then when you get to the university see if they have a finance advisor, and make them sit down with you and go through everything you could be entilted too. If you're living alone you shouldn't pay council tax, you might also be able to benefit from some other things, but I don't know them all, a financial advisor hopefully would.
Good luck with your course I'm currently doing a midwifery degree

I dont have to pay council tax thankfully, thats a killer!

I will speak to someone as soon as I get up there on Monday.. I didnt think were were allowed to apply for the loan due to us getting a bursary. (IM in Scot if that makes things any diff)

Goodluck with yours too.. I orig applied for midwifery but next intake was 2010  so who knows maybe someday..x

I would make an appointment to see your Lone Parent Adviser at the Jobcentre. S/he should be in a position to work out your entitlement just as if you were considering coming off benefits to take a job.
If you're doing the Degree in nursing rather than the Diploma/Advanced Diploma, you should be able to apply to your LEA for a student loan.
