Rough idea of cost of having hall stairs landing decorating?

Hi does anyone have any idea what it may cost to have hall stairs and landing decorated,? i know every hall stairs and landing is different to give a rough idea we live in an average semi small hallway and stairs and small landing. On the wall currently is textured wallpaper painted over (not artex) i would like this stripping off and either a plainer wallpaper or lining paper painted. The reason i ask is because i honestly have no idea what this would cost and don't want to waste anyones time getting a quote if its way more than we can afford.
Thank you in advance

I run a maintenance company and have recently priced similar jobs.

It was a day and a half stripping the textured wallpaper (some was chip wood which takes an age). I allowed 2 guys 1 and a half days to line (the long drops in a stair way are really a 2 man job) and allowed 10 rolls of lining paper. Threre are 7 doors in total (2 of them are 15 pane glazed SA doors) and the painting of all the woodwork and emulsioning ceiling and walls. We supply all paints (including colours). Off the top of my head it was over £1100.

    East Anglia prices.

A decent lining paper will cover most excresences. By that I mean 1200 grade and above. I would suggest a price window of £ 1100 - £ 1500.

    Cheers

  • Many thanks for your reply's, i think i may have to sweet talk my husband into attempting the job ourselves.
  • Around 4-5 years ago I paid approx £70. This was just to whitewash the walls around the staircase and landing area. (he did the bannisters as well). I would have done it myself but could not reach without an elaborate ladder system. However the existing paper was left on-just covered over with paint. Although it was not my ideal solution it looked tons better.
  • It very much depends who you get to do it.

A professional painter and decorator quoted us over £800 for the same as you are having done. I have no doubt he would have done a fantastic job, but fate intervened and he broke his leg. We were short on time so just got a handyman duo to do the same thing. They charged us less than £400 and still did a very respectable job.

If you aren't a perfectionist and just want a "good enough" job at a lower price, I'd consider a handyman rather than professional decorator. Remember that if you DIY, you'll most likely have to buy or borrow ladders with platforms to be able to reach above the stairs safely (unless you have very low ceilings and/or are freakishly tall).

gulp I was looking at getting some in to do one coat to freshen up the long wall only of stairs and landing ceiling me thinks will have to settle for roller on end of stick as no way I can reach it

Our friendly local painter & decorater chap charges about £150 per day - we supply the paint & paper, he supplies everything else. And he puts in a 10 hour day. Our stairs, hallway & landing took him 2 days, but that was just painting over magnolia.
