media player for dummies

hi
getting a bit confused/conflicting information and would appreciate a bit of basic help. wanted to record bluray/dvd's/vhs to a portable hard drive and play on tv, i understand basic media player can play stored media, (? hard drive to usb on player, player to tv via hdmi), but have been told the dvd's must be transferred to a portable hard disc using an internal bluray/dvd recorder only! and that some dvd's will not allow record, please set my mind to rest/recommend player or portable hard drive etc before i spend me moneys.
thanks.

You will need a Blu Ray reader to rip those disks to a HDD (will also play DVD's) you will also need software to do so as they have copy protection.
