Halifax Fixed Online Saver

My West Bromwich Building Society 2 year fixed rate bond has just come to an end & I am looking for another similar 2 year bond. The top 2 year fixed rate bond listed on this site is from the Post Office (Bank of Ireland) & pays 3.96%. I noticed that the online application process has been removed so I phoned them only to find that the bond has been ''taken down''. The only way to apply is at your ''local post office''.

Halifax offer a 'Fixed Online Saver' & for the 2 year option the rate is 3.85% so I am applying for this product. The interest rates are listed as being correct from 0.00am 31/10/2011. I am not sure if this is a new product or whether it is just a case of the interest rates being revised. The interest rates are slightly lower than the Post Office but are slightly higher than Cheltenham & Gloucester who pay 3.8% on a 2 year bond.

You are right the Post Office site has been having problems today with online applications for the Growth Bond Issue 15. It has intermittently been available to apply today online but is currently down.
To apply over the phone option was there (to send you a application pack in the post) but if you call them they wont send an application out for the Growth Bond Issue 15 products because they don't think you will be able to receive it on time and return it to them before Monday (7/11/11) when they will be withdrawing it.

The Post Office will be launching Issue 16 (don't know the new rates yet). So depending what direction they will be going in with the rates on the new Growth Bond Issue 16 (being launched on Monday) it might be worth getting Issue 15 at the post office while its still available.

Or you have the Bank of Ireland UK - offering 3.90% gross on their 2 year fixed rate Web Bond (can apply online)

Bank of Ireland UK is covered by Financial Services Compensation scheme (FSCS), Bank of Ireland UK and Post office share one lot of £85,000 protection.

I've just been looking at the Halifax Fixed Online Saver and saw that the rates are showings as:

    2yrs - 3.85%
    3yrs - 4.10%
    4yrs - 4.10%

    5yrs - 4.20%

Why are the 3yr & 4yr rates the same, do you think it's a mistake?

Unusual to have the same rate for different terms.

    But certainly not unheard of.

The 2 year rate is half decent.
  • I went to my local(ish) Post Office this morning & got an application form for their 2 year Growth Bond @ 3.96%. I have sent off my application complete with cheque so I won't be investing in the Halifax Fixed Online Saver after all. The Halifax 2 year Saver @ 3.85% should be in the best buy section of this site (2nd place,2yr term), below the Post Office but above Cheltenham & Gloucester.

Yorkshire Bank (and/or Clydesdale) have just brought out a new range - 2 year is 4%, 3 year 4.3% http://www.ybonline.co.uk/personal/savings/fixed-term-and-notice-accounts/term-deposit/term-deposit-personal-savings
  • The Halifax/Clydesdale Bank 2 year bond @ 4% has been added to the MSE best buy list too late for me. I notice that the Halifax 2 year Fixed Online Saver @ 3.85% has still not been added to the list even though it beats the Cheltenham & Gloucester account @ 3.8%.
