Barclays Website Down / Problems / Failure etc 2011 November 1st

Hi all,

I'm having troubles with the Barclays internet banking site. After calling the helpdesk, apparently so is everyone else

I'm surprised that internet searches don't show anything recent relating to this outage, and also dissapointed that even though the helpdesk agent stated that problems have been occuring since yesterday, there are no notices or any other information I can see on the Barclays site

I wanted to ask if anyone else is experiencing errors (i.e. does this only affect a subset of customers), or if anyone is successful using browsers other than Internet Explorer 8?

So others have it, the error messages I get are below. These have come from many attempts to log on:
'1100 - Sorry - we are unable to log you into Online Banking as your details do not match our records'
'5 - Sorry - Barclays Online Banking is currently unavailable'

'Internet explorer is unable to display the website'

'Page not available - server busy'

'Sorry - we have had to log you out of Online Banking because you did not use the service for more than 10 minutes' (after 10 seconds)
'Sorry - you have used the back button on your browser, so we've had to log you out' (approximate wording - again occurs without reason)
Unhelpfully, the website helpdesk has been rediverted to the phone banking helpdesk, so they are not able to tell me if my account has just been locked out given the number of logons. They did offer that the estimated time of resolution was 'this evening' (1st Nov 2011)

---as I speak, Barclays have put up this message on the logon screen:
We're currently experiencing technical problems in Online Banking that mean you may not be able to log in to the service. We are sorry for any difficulty this may cause and ask that you try logging in again later.

So - if anyone has any tips for actually logging on please let me know!

  • I had posted about this earlier this morn. I am having the exact same problems; I use Safari and can neither log in with PINsentry or manually.

Also felt that Barclays could've been more proactive by actually posting a notice and an estimated fix time/date on the online banking page so customers aren't left in the dark.
  • I am having similar problems. I have been trying to get into the Internet banking site. Initially I got the message that my user details were incorrect even when i was sure they were, then when I logged in, i was logged out immediate because according to the site, 'i had spent more than 10 minutes idle' and then when i tried again, I got the message, 'Internet banking not available at this time'.

When I called customer service, I was told that it is a general problem and that IT was looking into it. I was asked to try in 1 hour but it is still inaccessible. I wonder what is going on?
  • The same thing happened on the 1st of October at around 8.30am uk time.Seems strange that exactly the same outage occurs on the 1st of Novenber.Maybe Barclays hardware simply cannot cope with the ammount of users trying to access the service on what I expect would be one of the most busy days of the month.Maybe they should invest some of there reported 5bn profits today in some hardware upgrades :) 3 to 1 says the system crashes again on the 1st of December around the same time
  • It is still not up and running this morning. It is an absolute disgrace, and I am appalled that there is no apology or notice from Barclays stipulating when the problem is going to be fixed!!! I have lots of personal banking matters to address, and feel very frustrated.

Lloyds was also having problems yesterday morning. I could log in and get a list of accounts, but no details. And no payments.

And the government was hosting an international conference about cyber-attacks yesterday.

If the banks were under attack, they'd tell us, wouldn't they?

(Actually it would be surprising if they weren't. Everybody else is.)
"It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis
