I'm wondering if I can be MS and do without the start/demo disc in the starter pack? There seems to be tutorials on-line so is it really needed?

No, the demo disc is just examples of games you can play - you don't need it at all. I played mine for a few minutes before switching to a proper game, the demos end as soon as you've got used to the controls.0
