Over Paying with Npower

Options
Hi all,

My mother has been with Npower for the last 18 months and in Ocober they pushed here DD for the gas and Electric, £80 per month for gas and £120 for gas, now I had a talk with them at the time and explained that she only uses the gas for heating and would be on for 6 moths a year as she has an oil Aga for water and cooking, I worked out what she used last year and divided it by 12, here DD should only be £80 for gas, they wouldn't move and told me to call in Jan, now in Jan I called them, they wouldn't move on the DD amount, I told them that she only use the gas for 6 months and off the readings for the 3 months of the winter here usage was £395 so based on this over the next 3 months the total bill for the winter and infact here total yearly gas would be £800 and if you round it up to £900 for the winter her DD should be £75 per month, would Npower move on this, I tried to explain that she only uses gas for heating and for 6 months a year, and as they had half the years reading then would they sort it out, no I got fobbed off, it was like talking to a brick wall, they said she is £200 in debt and said she is over using her gas, I said yes but in the winter she would be in debt and by 1st October which is the year end for the account and the start of the winter period she will be in credit for £300 to £400 based on the current DD, to a 76 year old lady who has cut back so much on her usage and does not have the heat on in the morning to be told she is over using here gas is scare mungering, and knowing that come October she will be so much in credit is poor service from Npower.

Are these companies told to hold on to peoples money and to fob them off, as for the electric she is well in credit and we are in the middle of winter.

The woman at Npower got upset with me and said I was talking down to her, but I wasn't, just tried to explain in a calm manor, I said if the call was recorded and you played it back you would see I was calm, she said it was being recorded, I don't have a problem with this but don't they have to tell you before the conversation?.

Email them, and you will probably get a better response. That is what I finally did, and got my money back. Just make sure you put the account numbers, and any reference on the letter,
Also, when you send email, make sure you have the marked as read function on, so you can see that it has got there.

If you are in debt, they have to add this amount on to the estimated amount to be spent on usage to get the direct debit figure

So if you worked it out at £80 per month on last years prices, given prices have gone up, that's probably £95 per month now, plus £200 per month divided by 12 is another £20 per month almost to clear the arrears, so that would be £115 per month on my guess.

Have you worked the annual consumption from last year (for a full year obviously) at new prices and added on the debt figure and divided by twelve?
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
