How much does your sickness record work against you?

  • And the chap I once interviewed a long time ago had 20-25 days off with "probably about 22" occurrences had a score of circa 12,100... which would have been bad enough were it not for his explanation...

" well I had a bad back for a couple of days, a migraine once or twice and the rest was when I had gone out on the lash the night before and was still too ***k'ed up to come in".... 10 out of 10 for honesty, didn't get the job though.

Companies will typically use a scoring system, most are something simple like (total number of days sick) X (number of occurrences of sick leave)^2

So being sick for once for 4 days gives you a score of 4 where as being sick 3 times for a total of 4 days give you a score of 36. Some may also look at the sorts of illness for likelihood of repetition.

Its called the Bradford Factor: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradford_Factor

  • What!! I was asked about this today! And by a company that I wouldn't exactly call dodgy either! How weird is that?!

I never knew that. So they can't ask you for the days you have had sick in the alst year? I have filled in many forms that ask that.

I would count 4-5 1 day absences as pretty appalling tbh.

I know we can all go through a bad patch, but that's a poor score for 'unexplained' one day absences!

I got my current job while I was off sick with work-related stress in my previous job!

I think I would be screwed looking for a new job now though. In a year I've had 6 separate episodes however they total about 6 weeks - I was off for quite a long time after the accident and I've just gone back after 2 weeks on the sick and I'm still not 100%. However it takes a lot for me to ring in sick so those times I have been genuinely ill.

People's perceptions of what amounts to a genuine reason to be off sick vary. I've been working at a certain place for just a few months and already it's obvious to me who is the one that's always off sick. One person has had three periods of sickness in just a few months. Genuine illnesses but tend to be things that others wouldn't go off sick for.

Sometimes I wish they would. My boss struggled in to the office with a cold a couple of weeks ago. Since then 4 other employees have been off  And we only get 5 sick days paid per year, so we don't want to need them...

  • Dontcha just hate people who spread it about. I don't like taking time off sick (if I'm being paid I should earn it!), but I remember during the swine flu scare we had it in our office and I was so angry that one boss (who frankly did very little and so wouldn't have been missed), insisted in coming it once he caught it... so carried on spreading it around until he was told to go home.

Exactly Louise. And frankly I'm up for using 'working from home' more - it's perfectly feasible in my office to write up reports and keep in touch with colleagues remotely, but there's an HR-imposed rule that says "you must not work from home if you are too ill to come into the office". Surely there's a mid-point where you're not too ill to come into the office but it would be better if you didn't..?
