    Hi,

Never tried jumping on Barbie's chest Chipps. I bet your sister didn't learn that on Blue Peter. My camouflage outfit was passable but the alluring facial expression gave an undeniably unfortunate impression.

PipneyJane: I have at last tracked down the recipe for orange squash, lurking in my filing system, (ye olde shoe box). I've not made it for years and apparently it's 4 not 3 oranges.
    Here goes---

    4 oranges
2 and a half lbs of sugar
    3 teaspoons Citric Acid
    6 teaspoons Tartaric Acid
    2 teaspoons Epsom Salts
    2 pints boiling water.

Grate or zest peel of oranges. Squeeze out juice. Break flesh into small pieces. Put into large bowl.
Add the rest of the ingredients and pour on boiling water. Stir till sugar is dissolved.
    Leave to cool.
    Strain and bottle.

I hope that is right. I gave the recipe to my mother and this is her version of it, but she was well known for 'tweaking' things.
I last made it in the 70's when the bottles were a bit smaller, but have a go, it is really orangey and not dyed orange, tho' it doesn't look as if it is going to be when you first see it.
I believe that friends are quiet angels
Who lift us to our feet when our wings
Have trouble remembering how to fly.
  • Hi there - thanks for the recipe, do you dilute with water to drink I assume? Sorry for the dumb question :)

This is one of the recipes I use when doing rubber chicken.
    Cooked chicken, cut into chunks
Bacon scraps, they are 99p a pack round here & a quarter of a pack is enough
Fry the bacon scraps along with some sliced onion, I always add sliced mushrooms as I always have a few in the fridge.
Add a little extra oil. Sprinkle on some flour, about half a tablespoonful & stir it in.
Add milk stir over heat til it makes a thick sauce.
Place half of this in an oven proof dish cover with pastry or savory crumble, cook & then serve with mash, veg & gravy.
Add extra milk to the remaining mix to make a runnier sauce, serve over cooked pasta.
When I cook a chicken I usually make it in to 4 or 5 meals at the same time, it stops the problem of the family stripping all the meat off the chicken for snacks.
I try to make one chicken stretch to:-
Sunday roast served with yorkies, stuffing, roast spuds & veg.
    Chicken & ham pie
    Chicken & ham pasta bake
Special fried rice, using up the smallest scraps.
Chicken soup made from the bones.

Never let success go to your head, never let failure go to your heart.
  • Oh Hester, I like the sound of your chicken bakes - going to have a go at that as already there is more month than money. The heating has just gone off for the day and I am sitting here in thermal undies and socks, T shirt, fleece, gilet and tracky bottoms - nice and warm but wouldn't win any fashion awards, that's for sure.

Going to spend the day working on my homemade Christmas presents - not up to Kirstie standards but I reckon that by the time she's bought all the materials it would be cheaper to buy the stuff from John Lewis. I'm making velvet cushion covers for DD - got the material free by asking all my friends for old velvet curtains or clothes they didn't want and am making them 'envelope' style to avoid buying zips. Also knittings hats and gloves for family members. (I have bought some presents as well!) Soon I'll be making lemon curd and other preserves. As all my family work so hard and such long hours, which seems to be the norm these days, they really like homemade things and as I am like Huckleberry Finn, with plenty of the kind of time that isn't money, I'm happy to oblige.

Has anyone bought a real Christmas tree yet, and if so, how much did it cost? I do love a real tree but would like to have some idea of how much to pay before I go shopping.

I have to admit that my efforts to produce an Action Man out of an old Barbie doll was also a legend, for all the wrong reasons!

I wonder if it was anything like my sister's attempt? She got one of my dolls & turned it into a "boy" by the simple act of cutting off its hair & then jumping on its chest..... :rotfl:

I remember, as a child, sticking a pink plastacine willy onto my cousins Action Man :D - well, Sindy had boobs, so why not .

My Auntie was furious with me - not least because the willy dropped off down Action Mans trouser leg and got trodden into the carpet :(. I got my legs slapped for being such a "disgusting little girl". :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I was in MrS the other day and they had potted ones for a tenner. They weren't at all bad, I think they were about 3ft, so nice on a sideboard or coffee table in a corner.
Plus you can keep it for next year!;)

Amazing the difference in how an adult interprets an action compared to how a child sees it. My friend got sent home cos we were playing doctors and nurses with our dolls and my mother told us off for being naughty for sticking 'injections' - pins - in their bums. I wonder if it coloured our thinking as we got older? I didn't quite rise to a doctor but married a doctors son and Mother thought that was wonderful. Talk about confusing! :D!
