Loving this thread and will follow, my kids also have fond memories of them and me cooking, when they were little I used to have two days a mnonth just cooking and freezing, one day was meals and the other cakes, biscs and puddings. I didint work then outside the home, we lived in the middle of nowhere and money was tight, but we ate very well and I was more organised than I am today!!!

But why would they start a thread and not contribute to it?

I don't think it was anything sinister, just someone who was missing the tough thread

  • Welcome Vegasmags, thanks for the corned beef recipe, my hubby will not touch it unless its cooked with something else, but up till now I had only every done my version of corned beef hash - corned beef cut up small, mixed into mash and carrots - cooked till soft. I cook the potatoes and when cooked add a bit of milk and marg then add the corned beef and carrots and using the potato masher mash it all together, a very basic meal but filling and even hubby finds it tasty - its the kind of meal you can stretch and stretch by adding more potatoes and carrots. Kids used to always put tomato sauce over it and mix in, hubby brown sauce, but it was the only way I ever used corned beef. I couldn't get them to eat it with any other vegetable. Its a handy store cupboard meal as tinned potatoes and tin carrots work well with it. Made it many times when camping, as potatoes and carrots could be heated together in the liquid in the cans, then drained corned beef added and all mashed, can even get away without adding the milk and marg that way, although does affect the taste, but if covered in sauce then you don't notice. Used to be a very cheap meal but now with corned beef becoming so expensive its not that cheap, but I guess you could use spam or any other tinned meat or even fish ( have done the same with salmon and tuna when camping).

    Hi,
My boys were brought up on a shoestring in a very affluent area where all their friends were in a different league altogether. Everything they had was homemade, the garage I made from an orange-box was a legend and played with for years. My youngest son's bike was a mongrel made from bits of other bikes, but they remember their childhood as 'magical'. Certainly our house was a magnet for all the kids in the neighbourhood some of whom would have moved in if they could. They loved the homemade orange squash, (did you know you could make 3 bottles of concentrated orange squash with 3 oranges) and the homemade biscuits. So never worry that your children may feel deprived if they don't have all the latest gadgets, if their family life is fun and loving, that is what they will remember.

I have to admit that my efforts to produce an Action Man out of an old Barbie doll was also a legend, for all the wrong reasons!

Sounds like your house was the hub of the neighbourhood. Proves that you don't have to spend a lot of money just have the right attitude.

Please, how did you make the orange squash?

I wonder if it was anything like my sister's attempt? She got one of my dolls & turned it into a "boy" by the simple act of cutting off its hair & then jumping on its chest..... :rotfl:
