HMRC says they are unable to repay my tax

I phoned them yesterday and I have good news (I think). The constant repayment requests and angry messages I kept sending must have prompted them to speed up my refund. Basically they said my refund was ready to be paid from October 31; however the money will take 14 working days to reach my bank account. I assume that means that the money should definitely be paid by the third week of this month?0

It's very hard to get a refund out of HMRC at the moment. I have submitted amended returns for 3 clients, all of which are due a refund and they keep getting "lost."
No such problems where payment of tax is due though.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

Hi,
I realise this is an older thread, but thought I would share my experience for anyone needing help.
I have the same problem - making online repayment requests after overpaying, but seeing it apparently go back to square one after 48 hours.
The bloke I spoke to on the phone said it's to do with your initial payment clearing. Although it says on HMRC that I have paid, he said that the entire clearing process can take 30 days. So if the system doesn't think your payment has cleared, then it won't release your funds.
I've attempted another repayment, which is still saying 48 hours AFTER 48 hours, so perhaps this one is working. I'll let you know.0 -
My wife is in a similar predicament. She is owed nearly £2.5k by HMRC. We've made three repayment requests now with the first two resetting after the "48 hour" guff. This is only a few weeks after some very irate letters from HMRC requesting payment due to an error in a return from last year (it was my wife's employer's fault for not issuing a P45 when they closed down one company and started another). The second letter was demanding a payment to increase the payments on account, stating that interest was being charged on the amount owed... but the letter was 10 days old when we received it!!! The extra payments were made as soon as the letters were received and to my knowledge the payments have cleared.
What really annoys me though is the fact that we can't see anything else to do with my wife's account (e.g. future payments owed) until this repayment is made.

Therivierakid, it sounds like the refund is being held up because it includes part of the payment your wife made and it's still within 30 days of her payment.

Its very unfortunate that innocent people get caught up in this, but the 30 day period was introduced to combat a particular type of fraud. While its of little consolation to the individuals affected, HMRC has to take every possible measure to protect the public purse from organised attempts to steal taxpayers money. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Would you rather HMRC have left taxpayers exposed to losses that would have dwarfed the (disputed) figures from the case you are talking about? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Phone them and begin your conversation with, "I wish to make an official complaint about a late refund of tax."
As far as automation goes I was informed, only last week, that because of circumstances they were waiting for someone to make a manual intervention, but the person I spoke to wasn't able to do it.
Apparently if you make it an official complaint they get their butts into gear. Hope you get it soon. :cool:0
