To cut a long story short my fiancee lost her ring during a outing with the children. After numerous day searching the area we had no luck. Anyhow decided to call Virgin today who were pleasant who transferred the call to our insurer. After a friendly call explaining the circumstances we were told "Coltswald" (?) would call us within 24hrs to go into more depth detail. Who are these people and what should i expect. Excuse my ignorance this is the first time I have ever claimed.

They are probably loss adjusters, they will be talking her through how she lost her ring, the value, etc.
They are trained in this on the phone, if she tells exactly what happened things will be okay.
She must be devasted, I lost a little onyx ring, not worth a lot, but major sentimental value and I was upset for such a long time.
Good luck and hope things go okay.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

What's the value of the ring and when did you take the policy out?0

Cotswold will be validating the claim - this involves (usually) a 30-60 min telephone interview and then a document request letter. Their job is not to repudiate your claim, but rather to detect and deter fraudulent claims and ensure that claims are validated fully. They are not actually loss adjusters, all the work they do is over the phone.
edit: this is how the insurer I work for used them (six months ago), although we don't use them any more.0
