New House - No Supplier, Help?!

We moved house just over 2 months ago.
At the previous house we were with Ovo. When we moved, I went on the Ovo website, to the bit about moving house, sent them all the details, new address and all meter readings old and new as requested.
It is only the last week or so that I realised they haven't taken any payments since the last one at the old house! We were also £118 in credit. So I sent an email enquiring as to why they hadn't taken any payments, and got the resonse:

Thank you for your email.

Please accept our apologies that we have not refunded the amount left on the account, I have done this today and the amount will be back in your bank account in the next 8 - 10 working days.

I can't find your new address on our system. When you move properties you have to sign your new property up with us as a new sign up as it is not possible to transfer the supply from one property to another to follow the tenants.

We’ll make sure you are on the best prices we can currently offer and begin the process of transferring your new property. If you would like a quote for your new property, then please contact us on 0800 5999 440 or you can obtain this and sign up by going to https://www.ovoenergy.com.

So now I have the amount refunded into my account, but no energy supplier for the last 2 months! I thought it would be a good time to shop around for the best price, but each supplier asks for my current supplier, and how much we pay etc.

So to the point of my post ...What do I put here? I no longer have a supplier, never have had one at this house and have no idea of how much I use/pay?! What should I do?

Thanks, Sarah.
:heart2: THANK YOU MARTIN!! :heart2:

When you move in to a new property a "deemed" supply contract is created with the existing supplier to the property. Normally it is evident from "to the occupier" letters who the existing supplier might be. If not there are ways to find out. And if no letters be alert to the previous occupier not having closed their account. Also be aware that the deemed tariff will be standard, non direct debit, non online i.e. not the cheapest, so the sooner you sign-up the better.

When you contact the current supplier, as long as you don't agree a tariff with "lock-in", you are (then) free to switch without penalty by contacting the supplier of your choice. Or online once you have signed-up with the current supplier.

Compare with a Consumer Focus accredited comparison website. You will get a fairly accurate "headline cost" (but not accurate "savings") if you enter any supplier and tariff as current. Either choose "average usage" or enter 16,500 for gas and 3,300 for electricity. Beware "deferred discount" tariffs if you do not understand the circumstances the "deferred discount" may be forfeited.

You need to register with the existing supplier before you can switch. Your attempted switch to Ovo will have been rejected for this reason.

Aah so I have to make myself known to the existing supplier before I can change! That makes sense, I shall have a poke around and find out who they are. Thank you both :) x

  • hiya i could help with this but dont want to jeopardise my position (i work for a utilities company). who would you call in your area if you lost supply (distributor for your area)? try ringing them and they should be able to help you out and advise who currently supplies the electric.

And remember - you still need to pay for the electricity you use!
Take a meter reading now, and assume you're on 17p/kWh or so, so put that amount aside.

Just got a gas bill through from EDF, addressed to me, from moving date til 4th October, for £34.79! That's not too bad. Now I can get on with getting the best deal. Thank you all!
