the offence is not displaying a valid VED disc, not whether it was purchased or not

Yes she can tax it. No, she will not be prosecuted for the offence of not displaying a valid VED as there is a 5 day (or could be 7 day) "grace period" for those who have applied online before the expiry of the current disc which is 23.59hrs tonight. However if she applies for it after midnight, she would be liable for prosecution for failure to display.

The reality is that if she does it online tonight or at the Post Office tomorrow, nothing will happen.

if she is really concerned she can go into most mot stations and they will do her a duplicate mot for £10 as she waits, she can then take this with her renewal form or log book and insurance to a post office that does road tax and get her disc

i forgot to tax my truck the other month and it was 14 days out when i renewed it, i didnt have a problem, indeed dvla sent me a reminder to say it hadnt been done

you need to read my post again
she will need a hard copy of the mot for a post office or local dvla office
these are available at any mot station for a maximum fee of £10 or on the bay for a £5 if she can wait 24 hours

Renew it online (NOW!!) - post #3, you then have the 5 day absolution from 'failure to display' (definitely states this in the 'Taxing' box on your V11).
