wireless router firmware upgrade?

I was reading an article online about improving WIFI and one of the things to do is to upgrade the router firmware.
My router is supplied by Telewest (now Virgin for the pedantic) and is a Netgear WGR614 V6 router and the firmware version is V1.5.3_1.5.3.
I went to the Netgear website and there is a firmware upgrade to 2.0.19 1.0.19.
I was just wondering as Windows 7 is always being updated and there are always new drivers being released for everything, so should my router be updated as well?

not normally needed unless you have a specific problem that the firmware cures.
Some isp's supply router variants (usually has extra letters after v6) with their own firmware on, which won't work with the standard netgear firmware!!
