<<< Do this with disk manager - look in disk manager before you connect the drive - You will see what your C: Drive looks like, try using the different views. Connect up the enclosure. Have another look in Disk Manager. Try the different views. Look for the changes...
What i want know is if i connect the hard drive as external hard drive can i still format it without it effecting my xp on my laptop (You won't be allowed to format the Boot/System Drive ) or do i need to setup my old computer put one in format that take it out put another one in format that so on so on. <<< if you cannot tell the difference between your C: Drive and the drive in the enclosure in Disk Manager then YES you will have to set up other pc ...
or can i just put the hard drive in my external hard drive case plug that into my laptop that should then bring up in my computer drive f then go format drive f would that work too <<<< If the drive is not partitioned it will not be F: - use Disk Manager to (un)partition the drives ?

HTH that makes things clearer - the replies you have been given are cover all situations answers - sorry you do not like them ..... but using a GUI will stop any errors - using the command line partition tool can remove the wrong partitions we are trying to help ..... And I will not name that tool  ... but there are posts on here about recovering lost partitions ....

*just knowing one command can be dangerous.........
