My OH has just purchased a 1999 T reg Mitsubishi L200, it has come with a brand new MOT and 13 month warrenty. He will pick it tomorrow.

We have been discussing have it serviced, however, we have never had a car serviced or any other vehicle serviced before, so we do not know what should be included as standard. He has got a few quotes, but some say they do not include things like brakes. Should the cam belt be included in the service as well.

Thanks in advance

Cambelts are normally separate to all services - even full services.

  • A service that doesn't include brake strip and check is called an inspection, minor or intermediate service.

A full service on something like an L200 can be quite expensive, as well as any brake work needing doing, it may be due for gearbox and transfer box and diff oil changes depending on what's been done before, at the very least those levels all need checking and they do have renewal periods in the vehicles life.
It should have a brake strip and inspection as well, and the usual underbonnet items which many think is the extent of a service, the rear brakes are drum and cannot be seen unless the wheels and drums are removed..

Cam belt is a biggish job on those and is a separate item, it might be included in a specific mileage service at the Mitsi dealer but you'll need to be seated before Mitsi quote you.

L200 is a simple beast though and most jobs can be performed quite easily, i'd be doing all the work meself to keep the costs down.

It all depends on where you go - many places will offer things like a "5 star service" or "129 point service" however generally all they include is an oil and filter change and then look at things like fluid levels and brake condition.

A cam belt change will not be included in a service no, also when getting it done i'd recommend getting a full cam belt kit fitted along with a new water pump.

Also brake fluid changes are not included in services and brake fluid should be changed every 2 years. My local main dealer only charges £30 to do it...

Depends where you go, A full service at some places is an oil and oil filter change and a long list of parts
    they recommend you place urgently.

Some may topup your fluids for free others may charge.

Cambelts and brakes etc are all extra, And not a 5 minute job if its teh 2.5 engine with a balance belt.

Problem is if either of those belts go you could be looking for a new engine.
