A warning I guess?

Hi,
Not sure where I could post this so chose here as I suppose it could be a warning........?
Anyway I have a family member had something strange happen to her today I can't figure out if it was a scam, genuine or something else. Her history is recently separated (5 months) from her husband. He still gets a lot of mail go to hers though and yesterday when he came to drop the child off she handed him two letters. Today someone turned up at her house and knocked on the backdoor which is strange in itself as you have to ignore the front door and go down an alley to the back. When she answered a stranger was stood there with two letters in his hand. He then asked for the husband by name. When she explained he didn't live there anymore he asked for his new address. When she asked why he said he was from the crime prevention unit and two letters had been handed in. These two letters were from the same two companies that she had given to the husband the previous day (guessing the same letters). As she questioned him some more as to ID and asked for the letters he got very shifty. He handed them over but made a comment about the husband must be hiding something if she wouldn't give the address and then couldn't wait to get away.
Now my first thoughts were was this guy a bailiff or debt collector and just trying any trick to get his address?
Was it some sort of fraudster? But what was he trying to gain by trying to find the husband?
She rang the police who confirmed he wasn't who he said he was and are going round to take a statement later in the week. And just to add, the husband has got a history of getting into debt and taking high interest loans so someone collecting would not be a surprise. Husband was told and he now cannot find the two letters which he "thinks" he left in the car but door has been locked.
What do you guys think? Like I said at the start, not a vent or praise and not really a warning because I don't know what I am warning about!! But didn't know where else to post.

That was my first thought, just curious as to where he has found these letters though. Unless the husband dropped them and didn't realise.0 -
I would suggest that any further mail you get you leave unopened and pop back in the post box with 'return to sender, addressee no longer at this address' on the front - that way companies will know he doesn't live there any more and you won't have to deal with anyone else (hopefully!)0

I have told her she needs to sort his mail out.... These two letters were from Three and Natwest, don't think this guy was from any of them.0 -
