If the OP sends me a message with a telephone number to contact them on I will call the hotel and cancel the reservation. I speak fluent Spanish.

I don't have any advice to add but just wanted to say what a nice offer that is. There are such lovely people on MSE.

Hope you get it sorted, naepace.

Thank you very much for the offer, that's very kind of you. I have contacted trav.com & at first they tried to take no responsibility for the situation but have now agreed to look into it for me. If I get nowhere with them I may need to call on your language skills.
    Cheers again.

No problem. For interest when is the reservation made for?

Would love to see the source for that after we have had long discussions with our payment processors and legal experts who all say differently to you - about 80% of card issuers will not authorise a transaction on a closed card these days.

I was referring to transactions that were authorised whilst account was open, a very good example which pops up regularly on here is CPP/Sentinel policies renewing and being charged on a closed account.

When the hotel was booked, they would have reserved the entire amount of the stay on the card but not banked the funds, this could then go 2 ways..
    1. OP settles in full at end of stay - this hanging auth would then be voided and drop off account
    2. OP does not go to hotel - they then bank amount reserved on card and becomes payable, even if account is closed

I work for one of the CC Companies and see this on a daily basis.

You are right in respect to a new transaction cannot come onto a closed account though in majority of circumstances

Another alternative that may get a faster result would be if you PM me the name of the hotel I will call them and get an email address. I'll then PM you a message that you can cut and paste into an email and send them to cancel the reservation.

    HTH!
