Warning - Parcel delivery Services (PDS)

I'm not entirely confident on this scam but I have received warning from a trusted colleague who says that the Parcel Delivery Services (PDS) who apparently originate from Belize are delivering cards to say that while delivering a package you were out so could you please contact the number on the card to arrange delivery.

The number re-routes you to a recorded message - now here's the sting, once connected, you're charged for about £300 call connection cost.

Like I said, I'm not confident as it is word of mouth and if anyone out there can confirm this as a scam with some more details then could you add them. If this is just a myth - then apologies to PDS.

!!!!!!, surely not this old, worn-out hoax/myth again????

  • Thanks maninthestreet - you have been around long enough to have seen these over and over again!

Like I said - I wasn't confident but that doesn't mean it may not be a threat - I did debate whether to post or not but my conscience got the better of me - how would I feel tomorrow if someone post - "I was scammed by PDS! £300 taken!" (unlikely I know because they'd have to wait for the bill but the principle is still the same).

You could argue not taking the time to verify the truth before spreading disinformation around is ruder. It took me 5 seconds to type PDS into the search box and find the thread from 14 days ago.

It takes far longer to post than the 10 seconds it takes to search to establish this is a hoax and the only "threat" is the repeated forwarding of e-mails that mention it and posting about it on forums.
The top result for a google on "pds scam" is the Hoax-slayer report

  • I tried to verify with the post office and office of fair trading but couldn't see anything - hence my statement right at the start - you did read that didn't you? I mean really read it? Not just skimmed the title - made an instant judgement and typed an off-hand comment designed to insult and alienate an honest warning.

Just checking because I don't think you really read my statement - there were quite a few qualifiers for my comments in there and if you had a problem all you had to do was say - yep it's a hoax - see such and such thread...

You need to search the forums either by clicking the drop down box or the Forum Search heading. You'll then see your post first followed by the one 13 days ago and others, dating back years, will be in there.

So the post office and office of fair trading were unable to verify it was a scam-that's because it isn't - the only "scam" is passing on the false warning.
The post was read and as stated it would have taken a fraction of the time it took to post it to confirm it was a hoax.

This was what they put out last year
Postal scam chain email 2010 – PhonepayPlus’ statement
    17 November 2010

PhonepayPlus, the phone-paid services regulator, is aware that a chain e-mail about an alleged postal scam is being circulated on the internet. The email refers to the Royal Mail, Trading Standards and ICSTIS (PhonepayPlus' former name).

•PhonepayPlus appreciates that recipients of the email may want to find out more information about the alleged scam and has therefore issued the following statement:
•The chain email refers to a service (operating on 0906 6611911) that was shut down by PhonepayPlus (then ICSTIS) in December 2005.
PhonepayPlus subsequently fined the company that was operating the service, Studio Telecom (based in Belize), £10,000.
•The service is NO LONGER running and has NOT been running since December 2005.
•You do NOT need to contact PhonepayPlus, or the Royal Mail, about this service as it was stopped almost five years ago.
If you receive a copy of the email warning you about the alleged scam, please do NOT forward it to others. Instead, please forward this statement from PhonepayPlus.
•If you receive a delivery card through your letterbox which you do not believe is genuine and which asks you to dial a premium rate number, you can contact PhonepayPlus on 0800 500 212 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm) for further guidance.
•Please go to our FAQ for useful information about how to recognise phone-paid services and understand what they cost, and some simple tips to help you enjoy using services with confidence.
