1st dodgy ebay sale.

Well, ive sold several hundred items on ebay now over the last 2 years and had no problems. Ive got 100% feedback with no negatives.

Recently I sold a few old pre-recorded video tapes on ebay. I didnt expect them to make much and indeed some only made 5p + £1.50 postage which meant after I paid my ebay/paypal fee`s and postage/packaging i actually made a loss.

I only offered "1st class standard" postage, as anything higher would have made the cost of buying the video tapes too expensive for buyers.

Therefore, I was most supprised when one buyer bought a pretty boring vhs film off me for more than you can currently buy the dvd version for. Even though i clearly listed the item in the vhs section i suspected that maybe this person had bought it by mistake thinking it was a dvd.

Anyway, they paid instantly with paypal & i shipped the item that day using 1st class delivery.

Now, 4 weeks later they are saying they never recieved the item. Ive never had any other items go missing before and all the other buyers who bought tapes from me at the same time have had theirs and have left positive feedback.

Obviously I have a "certificate of posting" at home, and will be trying to put a claim into the post office for the loss, but it was amazing how my first delivery probably co-incidentally happened on this item.

Looking at the buyers history on ebay, it seems fine. No previous history of bad feedback or anything, so im assuming its a co-incidence, but even so!

Firstly, when you say pre recorded tapes I assume you mean 'real' tapes and not ones you recorded yourself?

Just refund the buyer and claim back from the Post office using your COP. As the buyer paid by paypal he can do a chargeback anyway up to 45 days from the date he paid amd since you can't prove delivery paypal will almost certainly find in his favour.

The claim via the post office is quite simple, you can fill the form out online and just print it off to send it in. You will also need to send the original COP (keep a copy for yourself) and an invoice to prove the cost of the item. I usually print off the ebay invoice and have never had a problem getting the Post office to accept that as proof of 'cost'.

Things do go astray, I had several items disappear just before Christmas and refunded or replaced them all within 10 -14 days and received positive feedback from all those buyers, which I have to say I was very pleased by!

Of course, they were original pre-recorded tapes. I certainly wouldnt sell tapes id recorded myself on ebay!

I didnt realise the claimback process was so easy. In which case, why do any ebay buyers bother paying extra for recorded or postal insurance?

If you use recorded delivery, you can prove the item was delivered so the paypla depsute will find in your favour.

You should always insure items in the post for their value. If you send a £100 item without additional insurance by normal post and it gets lost, the Royal Mail will only pay up £28.

Yes I do. Anything worth more than 28quid i usually send special delivery anyway and ensure its insured.

I didnt bother with this video tape as I expected it to only sell for 50p, but as it was it went for a tenner.
