Not to mention the recent law which requires you to have insurance in force if the car is not declared SORN (as referred to by another poster earlier on in the thread)

Which, as far as I am aware, has no grace period, even 1 hour of no insurance would initiate an automatic fine.

How about a database that matches taxed vehicles with uninsured ones? Although I dont know for sure, I think that any vehicle which shows as being taxed but with no insurance is automatically flagged and sent a letter/fine.

Best to check this out as I think this is now the case. I dont have a link but have heard this is a new legislation. Probably not worth the risk over 1 weeks insurance!

it's a bit confusing, according to the directgov site, a vehicle needs to be sorn if no insurance and various other requirements but it also says no need to sorn if keeping the vehicle off road and untaxed for less than 14 days. LINK.

(Last year) our insurance ran out on say the 27th of the month and tax at the end of the month. This meant you could not retax the car because it wasn't insured when the new VED would come into place. Drove me nuts for a few years.

The only way I could sort it out was to delay insuring it by a week. Just made life much simpler.

(This was just before the new rules came in on VED and SORN)
  • soryr for seeming a bit dim but im not really understanding the op

if you get a free week from aviva and are insuring after that, where is the gap?

or do you mean you wont be putting your own policy in place until 2 weeks after you have bought the car?

Yes, thats what I was planning to do. One weeks free aviva insurance and one week with out insurance (when I dont have plans to use the car). But based on all the above answers, I have decided to go for an insurance as soon as the free aviva cover finishes.

    Thanks
