Power to sockets tripping...

It really can be a multitude of things , and the fault finding process could well be where you will end up paying the most for !!
i had an electrical fault ,,, all mains sockets tripped !! after hours of my checking sockets , applicances etc, i had to call a pro out !!
My Electrician had floor boards the lot up , then 3 hours later he called me over,
He showed me a ring main juction box that was under a suspended floor , it was all blackened , he opened it up and there was a fried slug across the live and earth !!!!
I would not have beleived it , if i didnt see it with my own eyes !!!0 -
Fridge/freezer seems a good place to start.
What about central heating/hot water programmer?
Shouldn't the landlord have a routine electrical inspection anyway to make sure it is safe ore doe that just show that the RCD/breakers actually work and that there is an earth?"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... OP can you confirm exactly what it is that is tripping ? is it the actual fuse / mcb or is it the rcd if theres one fitted ?
If its the rcd then its likely to be an appliance that is starting to go faulty or it could be a neutral fault on the wiring.
If its the fuse / mcb that is tripping again could be an appliance going faulty but this should also blow the fuse in the plug top so you would easily find the faulty appliance, but it could also be a fault on the wiring side of things.
Either way dont waste money on a socket tester, it might tell you there is a fault, might not, what you need is a sparky so tell the landlord to get it fixed, its his responsibility. You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0 -
That's what I asked a couple of day's ago-no response.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Hi,
Sorry but I don’t know the difference between the two which is why I hadn’t answered that particular question.
Only the power to the sockets is tripping and when I look at the electrics panel (poor knowledge of the terminology!), it’s only that one switch / fuse which has tripped – the one that’s got ‘power sockets’ written above it. Does this answer it?
I’ve spoken to the landlord about it. My problem is that all sorts of things have been going wrong but they claim that the previous tenants never had any problems.. at all! This is not necessarily true though, I was quick to point out that the tap in the bathroom and the lights in the kitchen weren’t working when I moved in and I doubt that it all happened during the 24 hrs between the previous tenants moving out and us moving in. I just think that the tenants either couldn’t be bothered to let them know or didn’t want the landlords coming to the house.
Anyway, I digress... :-)0 -
OP at the risk of repeating myself if you haven't been unable to identify the cause through unplugging appliances . then the electrical system in your property needs testing by a proper sparky. As you rent that is the landlord's problem to sort out. Don't give them wriggle room.

So you have an MCB that is tripping only the circuit in question. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
OP as previously told it is the landlords problem. Mention that if its not done then if anything bad happens as a consequence of his inaction you've been advised it will be his responsibility and liability... All together now, "Always look on the bright side of life..." :whistle:0
