Pensions - how much does your company pay in?

I thought my pension was reasonable for the private sector, until I spoke to another friend whose company contributes double what mine does, so I thought I'd do a poll to see what percentage (private sector) companies pay into pensions.

I'm after info for private sector companies who pay a % contribution into a pension.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Ours pays 6% with no contribution from us, then goes up the more we contribute ourselves.

Mine matches contributions up to 5%, with the max we can put in ourselves being 6%.

  • Most the places I worked contributed between 10-15% and would also do matched contributions.

My longest employer did an age related element that started at 10% and went up to 20% basic plus matched contributions of up to 5%, I was on 15% however when they then stopped doing any contributions and instead loaded everybody's salary by 25%. I was highly surprised at the time they did it that they made a big thing on how this would allow you to increase your take home pay instead of having to have a pension but naturally you could continue paying in if you wanted to.

Mine is up to 7.5% (which I have to match), which I thought was quite good until a friend said he gets 15% without having to contribute himself!

The last company I worked at contributed 4.5% max (and I had to contribute 6%).

For people who don't get a pension, how are you planning on funding your retirement?

If the state pension is still around when I'm old, I'll claim that. I'm also paying into my own private pension (just because my employer won't contribute doesn't mean I can't) and building up my ISA collection each year (tax free wrappers).

At all my previous job there was no pension so the answer would be zero

No idea? More worried about a job to be honest and since I have no property either or a partner I am pretty much doomed. Plus at my age there is no point starting one as my brother who is a fully qualified pensions person told me I'd have to put more than £400 a month into one with the company matching it for it to be worth anything.

I thought there was no limit for employee contributions?
    Mortgage May 2012 - £129k
    January 2015 - Mortgage down to £114k
Target for 2015 to get down to £105k
  • My company contributes 7%, I have to contribute a minimum of 3% but I match their 7%. Aim to increase my conts by 1% a year.
