HPI check?

Options
I am in the process of buying a used car (one year old 60 plate) from a main dealer. Do you think it would be wise to have an HPI check done, or would this be a waste of money?
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

  • The dealer should have done a HPI check anyway (they'll certainly try to tack on an "admin fee" to your invoice for doing one)

If it's a kosher main dealer I wouldn't bother. Odds on the dealer will have had it HPI checked themselves anyway, and will be happy to show you the results of the check - that's always been the case when I've bought in the past. And if anything does turn out to be wrong, you'll have a good claim against them.

It's a completely different matter if buying privately or through an Arfur Daley from a rented lockup ......
  • will show finance outstanding anyway, because the dealer buys them on finance then pays that off with some profit left over when you buy it and then the tag comes off unless your purchasing it on finance also wich means the finance tag will stay on it.

the dealer will most certainly try and charge you around £60 -£110 extra admin fee for the HPI check he has already done on it when he took delivery of it, refuse to pay it, but ask to have it or see it. and again look over your paper work and invoice, for any extra fee's ask what theyre for and be prepared to be a hard up git and threaten to walk away from the deal if he dont remove the extra charges for you that you didnt request at all.

Thanks to all. I have had a close look at the invoice and there is no mention of an admin or HPI fee in the total balance I have to pay. I dare say the HPI fee will be allowed for in the profit margin. I shan't bother to do my own. It is a one year old Hyundai i30 automatic with 6100 miles on the clock, ex-mobility, so should be OK.
