Hi, I've tried 4 USB ports on one pc and 3 USB ports on the other. All the ports work for other devices so I'm pretty sure it's not them. Thanks for the idea though, all help is appreciated0 -

I'd also suggest this. I had an external drive that my PC refused to see if it was plugged into the front USB port, but when plugged into the rear port, it appeared straight away. This is to do with the power received by each port (the rears are directly connected to the motherboard, whereas the fronts are connected by an external connector).
It can't hurt to try!

Absolutely, will give it a shot! Does the power received by the port matter as the hard drive has its own power supply?0 -
Unlikely to be the HFS+ thing then. Sounds like a dud. Before you take it back though have you tried a different USB cable? And can you feel/hear the disk spin up inside (could be getting enough power for the USB/flash side of things, but a dodgy power supply not able to spin the disc platters up). Just to rule out everything obvious?0
