Savings on peak time rail?

If you're a train commuter and you buy monthly peak-time rail tickets, you possibly only use it for weekdays even though the ticket covers weekends as well. But you can buy DIY tickets online for any dates you wish (you can on Southern at least) provided it's for a month or more. So what if you buy tickets that start on a Monday and then extend through to the first Friday following the month end? You'd be skipping one weekend every five, which might save money unless the fares have been structured craftily enough to prevent it. I've tried to check this on Southern's web site, but the dates on offer don't go far enough into the future to check it properly. Any thoughts?
