Try reinstalling the soundcard drivers from the manufacturers website.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Also make sure things aren't muted. I know it sounds silly but xp has a tendancy to auto mute sometimes.
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Volume Control
check in there

Is it a branded PC, with original soundcard? If so, go to https://www.whateverbranditis.com, and search for your PC model in the drivers/support sectionEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

I had a similar problem the other day also using xp. I went into start then right click my computer, go to manage, device manager, sound video & game controllers. When I clicked on the unknown device there was a button to reinstall drivers and it did it automatically.
Hope this helps. I'm not techie minded at all but my friend told me to do that and it worked.0 -
Many thanks for your help. All working now.
I discovered on another site that the fault was known and is due to one of the critical updates from windows.
Anyone else with this problem ,I reloaded driver - realtek ac97.
