Co-op price difference

Can anyone tell me why two branches of Co-op have differences in their prices? My brother and I have recently noticed these differences. Both brances are only three miles apart, both in London. Here are a couple of examples:

Branch 1
High Juice 1ltr (own label) £1.49
Baguette 400g £0.85

Branch 2
High Juice 1ltr (own label) £1.63
Baguette 400g £0.89

Difference £0.18

Now that may not sound a lot but over a whole shopping list that could total a few pounds. Branch 2 is my local, branch 1 my brother's. I know i don't have to shop there and for my big shop i don't but for top ups it's closer.

Most shops are like that,I noticed a difference in the prices between Asda in Newtownards & the one in Bangor (Northern Ireland) & apparently it's partly based on how affluent the area is.

Yep, chances are they also stock some different items too - supply and demand. ;)

With co-op they have price bands. Price band 1 is for supermarket sized stores and will be the £1.49 price, price band 2 is the majority of stores. Pb1 stores also have much better offers and offers that pb2 stores don't get.
It's generally size or location near a tesco etc that will choose what pb a store is.

supply and demand in my area drives me up the wall- i live in an area that "could do better" but get infuriated when none of the 2 co-op's near me sell what i want- even basics like washing up sponges- do people around here not do washing up then?!

Back to the original question- i thought i was the only person who thought this- in branch 1 (2 mins up the road from me) 4 pints of milk is 1.85. In branch 2 (5 mins up the road from me) the same 4 pints of milk are £1.49!!!! Both in the same area

  • yup...also depends on where the store is and how expensive the rates are for that store (if you get my meaning)

Co-ops are also regional, and are run by different societys, if you work in one your staff discount card will probably not work in one 5 miles up the road....

The best/only way to shop at the Co-op is for their special offers or at the end of the day bargains. Their normal prices are higher than other supermarkets.

  • Until a few years ago, the town where I live had two Co-op stores within a couple of minutes of each. There was no connection between tham apart from the "Co-op" bit. One was Co-op Southern and then other wasn't.

Yup,I bought a bag of Putin One dry cat food for Daisy,on offer in my local Co at £4.00,reduced from £5.18 ish.
The same size of Purina One is sold in Tesco's over in Bangor at £4.00 ish normal price.
Kinda felt cheated in that what I thought was a bargain was in fact a rip off by the Co.

Up until a couple of years ago both stores were Somerfields this changed when the Co-op brought them out. So i presume that they belong or are run by the same society.

I'm going to write to them and see what they have to say about the price differences.
