    If you only had a basic Sky package and freeview why don't you just get a PVR

    Its similar to sky + in that you record but you don't pay a subscription. I got a refurbed one about a year ago to replace a sky+ box because we weren't really watching anything on sky that wasn't on Freeview. We were paying £20 a month for a couple of kids channels really.

    ...or a HDD/DVD recorder? Record to HDD, if you want to keep something permanently, transfer to DVD

    I would ring sky, and if they dont offer to upgrade you for free, or very little cost, tell them you want to end your subscription and go to Virgin Media instead. They will fall over themselves to keep you on board then...

    VM are grossly expensive. For the same package I have with Sky they want to charge another £30 on top of what I already pay.
