Over-loaded network?

Hi

I'm not sure if this is the right board to ask this on, but any help is appreciated?
I'm not very techy so please bear with me.....:o

Basically, i've got sky broadband (supposedly 20Mb), and I've got sky anytime+ (via ethernet cable), 2 laptops (wireless), and xbox live (wireless) running on my connection.

Is this too much, and can I do anything about it (while keeping all the connections?).

They all tend to be used at the same time as it's a busy household unfortunately, and doing things like downloading a movie on anytime+ takes all day while simultaneously stopping my laptop from connecting to the internet!

Also, i've got sky multiroom, with the upstairs box telephone connection being via an extension lead from downstairs, but when the phone rings, or when i ring out, the internet connection is lost completely. It comes back on as soon as the phone has been put down?

I HAVE got those microfilter things everywhere you can think of, but it still does it, and i've tried numerous positions within my elaborate wiring setup for these filters. If I put them in certain parts of the loop, I can't get an internet connection at all unless I completely disconnect the telephone extension to the upstairs box.

I appreciate this may all seem a bit like the ramblings of an idiot, but like I say, i'm far from an expert.............

So, like I originally asked, is there anything I can do to make everything work in harmony?
Is it possible to have two wireless routers on the same network for example, and would it make any difference if I did?

PLEASE HELP ME............. :(

Thankyou:)

If they are all running at the same time via wireless then they are going to slow the network down. The wireless only runs at 54mbps so they are all fighting for the same connection.

If the Sky Anytime is on wired connection then it should not affect the wireless, the X box should be on wired rather than wireless.

    Also are you on Unlimited?

  • Hi,

Yes I am on unlimited. The anytime+ is wired as you say. Generally, the xbox and the laptop will run together smoothly, a bit slower than normal, but like you say, that is to be expected. It is pretty much the downloading on anytime+ that ruins everything?? And the bit about losing all internet connectivity when the landline phone is in use??

sounds like your internal wiring is a bit of a mess..... first thing, post the line stats (you will need to log into the router for this)..you're looking for (upstream and downstream) connection rate, attenuation and SNRM. Post these here.

Look at both these links about optimising your internal wiring...

    http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm

    http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php

You will probably find your line speed is nowhere near 20meg, it is UP TO. You'd have to have downstream attenuation of 23dB or less to get 20 Meg..

All your devices are sharing the available bandwidth, so youtrying to download large (in terms of data) anytime files is bound to have an impact on your other devices.

From your point of view, the more concerning one is the bb cutting out when the phone is in use - a sure sign of a line fault :(
