Treatment for old wooden doorstep

Hi all
Our back door has quite an old wooden step that is slightly chipped and most of the original pain has come off. I had expected it would need completely replacing, but we recently had a carpenter in to replace the old door, and he said that the step was made from strong wood and should be fine - but that we'd need to seal it properly.
I have now sanded off all the original paint remnants and have also been out looking for a product to do the job of re-sealing the wood -- but I can't seem to find the right product. I'm not sure if I am looking for a sort of pre-treatment, a stain or a paint - the closest I've found to what I think I need is a Ronseal product called Diamond Hard doorstep paint, but it seems to be only for concrete and brick, and this step is wood.
Can anyone help? I really want to get this sorted out before winter kicks in!
thanks all

Have you looked at yacht paint?
If they use it on narrowboats I am sure its good enough for your step. Not Again0 -

Fair point - so would yacht varnish also do the job (over a newly-applied coat of paint)? Would it then matter what sort of paint I used?
I'd like to use some existing paint I have that's the right colour, so if you think the yacht varnish would work as an adequate sealant, then that would work well for me.0 -
Have a read of this.
Just saw your other post. After 2nd coat of varnish use undercoat and your paint. You can apply a clear varnish over the paint if they are compatible.0 -
I always use black Hammerite Smooth for door steps. Very robust and lasts for years.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

If the wood is completely dry you could do it but if you are buying yacht varnish you may as well just buy the right colour yacht paint.
If you get my drift.Not Again0 -
