pot maker
anyone know how to make these pots for free? i have a load of seeds for sowing march, and want them planted out in these newspaper pots...
http://www.plantstuff.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=114&products_id=2535
also, any ideas what makes these so good for storing fruit/veg...?
http://www.plantstuff.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=28&products_id=2645
i understand fruit/veg just needs air circulating/dark/cool conditions, but mine still wont keep that long (esp potatoes...). ive also tried wrapping items individually in newspaper, but no good...

You make the pots the same way as the gizmo, you tear a strip of newspaper about a 4 inches wide and long enough to wrap 2/3 times round a deodorant can, and push the bottom of the paper up inside the pot. (The gizmo is easier) and that one you see is a too dear, do a search in Google (Froogle) for a paper pot maker. (£10)
As for the fruit rack, ask your greengrocer for wooden boxes, that thing is a joke. £200!!!My Mind wanders, if found please return.0 -
I would never have bought the fruit rack - I was thinking along the homemade lines, from some old furniture and offcuts, but i just wondered if anyone actually knew why it should be better for fruit/veg?
the same with the pot maker, id rather get instuctions online for free, but mountains of information is coming up whenever i write in pot (tsk tsk)!0 -
I've herd you can plant beans in old loo rolls then just plant the lot. I'm saving some up to give it a try.0

Potatoes are stored "under ground" in a clamp - this site shows.explains how to store various "root" veg ..
The fruit rack is good for fruit - unwrapped and not touching. A friend's parents used to use an unheated spare bedroom to store apples and pears on every flat surface and all the old chest of drawers they could get in there - the smell was amazing ........:lovethougRich people save then spend.

But don't over water them - they get mouldy and fall apart - aledgedly

You can easily make an origami cup, which is the same thing but with sloping side. They don't stand up well on their own though, so I wedge them together in a seed tray.

Sweet Peas also have long root system - so save a few Loo Roll tubes for them & enjoy a bit of colour0 -
lovely, i'll be saving up loo and kitchen rolls, and the pot makers fab! :j
i have a cold understair cupboard and a lot of old wood bits lying about so i think i'll have a stab making something for under there this afternoon...0 -
The problem with using loo roll tubes (etc) is that they can very easily get too damp and rot off, either make a paper pot (see my earlier thread on this board - make paper pots with no tools),
or
make a double thickness length of newspaper (say 4 or 5 " wide), wrap around the loo roll (using the roll as a shaper) with a decent overhang, twist or fold the end to create a base, then remove the tube.... first time is a fiddle, but you will get the hang of it
once the roots start to come through the paper, just pop the whole lot in the ground! 0
