ESA Advice Please!

My partner and I have just put in for a income related ESA as he is unable to work due to a tractor accident 11 years ago when he was 13. He had his pelvis and hips and that area crushed by a tractor and subsequently cannot stand/walk or sit in one place for long periods of time, he also cannot read or write. He has driven machinary in past but cannot do so for long periods and therefore has trouble holding down a job. This is the first time he has claimed any benefits since he was 18 and was claiming incapacity. Since then he has not claimed or worked and relied on me and his parents to support him. We are awaiting the questionnaire but am wondering what this asks and what happens next?
I was claiming income support but they have stopped all benefits now because we are making a joint claim so wondering how long we will be without money as we have a 3 year old to look after too! Sorry this is a bit long winded :o
