PAYE problem

I was paid by PAYE by my ex-employer. The tax office are chasing me for about £600 in tax as they say I have underpaid during the period I worked for said employer - it's been going on for about 6 months.

I have been in contact with my ex-employer and to his credit he has tried to sort it out, but the tax office don't seem to understand what's happened.

I'm stuck in the middle, and the tax office are still sending out reminders for the money I supposedly owe.

With it being PAYE I can't see what the old employer has done wrong. I've been through my wage slips and can't see a problem.

Is there any way I can resolve this quicker? Or should I just sit it out and let them argue between themselves?

It's not really your employers problem but may very well be yours so you can't just leave it. The tax office should have told you what's wrong and then you will know who is at fault. If the employer has used the wrong code and underpaid tax then the bill is yours.

That's the opposite of what the tax office told me, and I thought was a bit odd - hence the question!

I can never get a straight answer out of them. They've sent me a letter detailing the information they've got. It doesn't have dates on it, so I can't trace when they think I've changed salary grades etc. Basically, it tells me very little.

    I'm a bit stuck really.

Well the tax office may say the opposite but a few years ago that's what happened to me. The tax office sent the wrong tax code to the employer and I underpaid tax. I then received a bill which was paid in extra tax over the next year. So it was most definitely my problem.

But according to the news there are millions of people in a similar position having either underpaid or overpaid tax and the tax office care not that you don't understand, they just want people to pay.

I'm sure if you gave exact details people here would be able to work out what has gone wrong.
  • I can't give exact details because I don't know any. I'm working blind. My records look right, from what I can tell. It could be that my ex-employer has done something completely wrong that I wouldn't know about.

Since the year end 2011/2012 hasn't taken place yet there is now way they know you have underpaid yet for the last 6 mths. You sure this is not a demand for underpaid tax in the year 2007? This has been on the news that there are going to be a lot of peple with demands and some with rebates

What records do you have that you say 'look right'

Did HMRC say what this underpayment was for and what year.

What dates did you work for your exemployer, from when to when

Then how do you know they are chasing you for £600? If that's what they are asking for they WILL have sent you a demand that shows how the amount has been calculated, even if it's not very obvious what it means - find that and tell us what it says and we can advise the best way to approach it.

    I haven't worked in 2011.

It stems from back pay because my employers were underpaying me in 2008/2009.

Presumably HMRC have sent you a request for an underpayment? What did this say?

What details are on the P60 for the time in question?
