    Hi Tina,

Maybe you could add some extra things like decorations ie. sugar flowers and so on. Cooking chocolate? wooden spoon?

Silicone cupcake cases - try amazon i think these are quite cheap http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silicon-Silicone-Cupcake-moulds-Available/dp/B000V1Y65I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1319977632&sr=8-3

cupcake books- it depends how old he is but there is a great range in the works.

    Hope this helps

As far as ingredients go I'd be inclined to get (as it's for a gift)
1kg bag of self raising flour (Homepride/Allinson/Dove Farm
    1kg Caster Sugar
6 Eggs (I'd get free range for a gift)
Butter (I'd buy this but keep it separately)
Vanilla Extract or some of those vanilla pods
    1kg Icing sugar
I'd also get some paper cake cases as well as the silicone ones (but that's me)

Books (I don't know how old your son is)

How about a wooden spoon, silicone spatula, nice bowl (I love the Mason Cash bowls) measuring cups (I got mine from Asda for a couple of quid - they're useful when the recipe is American)

  • Try the pound shops for silicone cases or Homebargains they usually have them in. Although I have had a bad experience with silicone bakeware, where the cake tasted like plastic?! So I have gone back to metal cake tins and paper cases. Homebargains tend to have these in at reasonable prices.
    What about an icing syringe?
(I did buy an icing bag in homebargains for around 70p but mine split, my syringe has lasted a few years now)
How about an apron and matching oven mits - available in homebargains, dunhelm mills
premade icing tubes in different colours or a box of icing sugar and food colourings
My 2 loved the effect of the silver edible spray, about £3.50 in Tesco.
What about a cupcake stand? Depending on your budget, you could get a cardboard one from Hobbycraft or the range, or a plastic one from ebay (my 3 tier was £10)
As for a book, look at the works or other discount book shops, they tend to have lots in.

I hope you don't mind me asking but how old is your son?
  • Oh and measuring spoons from asda - they are really colourful and are cheap :)
Best places I have found for baking items are
    Wilkinsons
    Homebargains
Sainsburys - have a fab kids baking range
pound shop (the one with the green sign lol)
tesco and asda for icing colours / metalic spray

the book i work from is the Hummingbird Bakery book- they are proper scrummy! Having said that, I would advise just to start him off from the very basics- some little fairy cakes and maybe a victoria sponge, then add in the more complicated stuff as he (and you!) become more confident in his abilities.

I would go with any of the above recommendations where to get things

    Good luck!

  • I did this last year for Godaughter & will be doing the same this year for nieces although havent started buying yet. I have made them each an apron though from a tea towel.

I bought all the bits & bobs from wilkos & asda but I didnt buy ingredients, just the equipment. This year however I will be doing the opposite!

I have seen lots of "cake in the jar" mixes on the net, like this12-199x300.jpg

I have bought some large 1 litre jars from IKEA (£1) and will make them up nearer the time.

I have lots of cupcake books but usually end up with recipes from the internet. I love the "love bakery" cupcake book for ideas though but also the little books that BBC Good Food do are fab! I never use silicone cases even though I bought them! I just prefer proper cases, you could buy somenice cupcake wrappers to sit them in when they're finished though as a nice finishing touch. I also think some little decorations would be good. If you found a nice recipe for cupcakes you could put all the dry ingredents weighed out in a nice jar.
Lol i see tamster beat me to that suggestion!
