eBay buyer cancelled their PayPal payment - what do I do now?

I sold an item on Ebay, totalling £9.40 including P&P on Sunday. The buyer paid for it on 25th and I got the details off and was going to post it yesterday, but I couldn't for various reasons.
Another item finished in the meantime, so I went back onto PayPal the next day to get the details of the second item so I could post them together and I happened to notice that the first item has 'cancelled' next to the payment. In 'details' it says it was cancelled on the 27th!
Neither PayPal, eBay or the buyer has contacted me and it's only luck that I didn't post the item out, presumably then the buyer would've had both the item and the money???
I'm unsure what I should do now? I have contacted the buyer to find out whats going on, but haven't had a response, I have also marked it as payment not received. Do I have to process a refund or will the money be removed from my account automatically? Should I open an unpaid item case?
I find it shocking that PayPal don't even notify you that the payment has been cancelled! I know there's that stuff on there about payments being reversed, but it's never happened to me before and I didn't realise it would be so one-sided and I don't know what to do next, PayPal and eBay's help sections are no help!
