Sickness from work

What support mechanisms have been discussed (and agreed) which can be implemented to address the work barriers causing your anxiety?

What policy arrangements exist to facilitate a phased return to work - for example if you have a period of occupational sick pay which isn't exhausted this should be used to "pay" for your time not at work during the return period.

Its rather futile to phase you back in if the underlying cause hasn't been addressed.

  • The problem is - that it can kick off a disciplinary after [for example] 5 separate periods of sickness. So one for the 7 weeks, and 4 separate sickness incidents in the first week [each 1/2 a day long] and bang - you are in the office being given a warning.

Phased return is quite common in the civil service and as far as I know the sick leave used during this period does not count as separate incidences, they are classed as part of the same period of sickness.

My husband returned to work after 1.5 years off sick and is now two months into a planned 3 month phased return. It has worked out brilliantly as there is no way he could have jumped straight into a full week.

The best thing to do is ask your manager what the company policy is regarding sick leave during a phased return period. You may be worrying about nothing.

Did they consult with you during this process? The assessment is required to be suitable and sufficient.

What are the stressors - what causes your anxiety?

  • Surely if you are going to have a phased return to work (the best way to do it in my opinion) then if the company DO treat the unworked hours as "sick", it is the same phase of sickness which has caused you to be off for the past 7 weeks so you will still have just one "period" of sickness?

So what has changed there now? You feel better because you've been away from it. What is going to stop you feeling bad again if you go back?

Where I work a phased return uses annual leave to make up the person's normal hours. Though I don't know what happens if there is no annual leave left.

Also a phased return can be changed either way, so if after a week the person and their line manager feels they can return to normal hours they can and also they can also lengthen their phased return.

Ask if you can use annual leave to make up the hours.
