Amazon problem - need help

Options
Hi

Went online to order something from Amazon to find my account closed. Tried twice to find out what was happening through the 0800 customer service but got nowhere (and got incredibly wound up too) as kept being told they couldn't help as my account had been closed and did I know who could have done it? I had gift certificates in there , my order history and my kindle books!
By searching online I found another email address resolution-uk@amazon.co.uk and found out that evening via an email that amazon themselves had closed the account after unauthorised activity over 10 days earlier(!) and that I should contact my credit card company and cancel my card. I have since spent hours on the phone and writing emails trying to get a new account set up and trying to get my gift certs back ( done now) and my kindle linked.

I am just stunned by the fact that my account could be closed without them telling me, that my credit card was at risk and they didn't tell me until I alerted them and nothing from my old account can be transferred to my new account. I have spent hours contacting them and they don't seem to appreciate this let alone compensate me for it. Is there anywhere I can put in a formal complaint. It has put me off Amazon in a big way as I thought they were great at customer service until now.

If its put you off Amazon in a big way why do you want to sign up again ;-)

Are you saying you got no emails in you inbox or your spam box for any activity? Something doesn't add up as the fraudulent activity would have triggered order emails - something has gone wrong with your emails by the sounds of it (sure amazon could miss an email or two but not THAT many).

I am not sure why you think you should get compensation for it? They could have just let the account go fraudulent and that would have caused you a whole heap more hassle - at least they protected you from fraud...there is an element in this that makes me think they couldnt win either way...

    Thanks for your reply.

Well I guess it is hard to turn your back on Amazon - I have ordered from them for years.

No I didn't receive any emails from them. I don't think it was my email account that was at fault as nothing else seems to have been affected. I am guessing there was an automatic shut down of my account and so that stopped emails getting sent.

Not sure about my levels of gratitude. Of course I am pleased that it all got stopped - though there is no way of telling whose fault it was that my amazon account got taken over by someone else. It was just the fact that I wasn't alerted about the fraudulent activity and the people I have dealt with don't seem to understand how to put things in order again and it has all been left to me to do it. I keep being told that something can't be done and then I persue it and find it can. I just want to deal with someone who understands how Amazon works.

I guess until it happens to you it is hard to understand the frustration you feel waiting on phone lines for people who don't have a clue how it all works.

If you got in to someones Amazon account, what would the first thing you would do................change the password and email.

Thank your lucky stars whoever got in didn't mae off with your money.

You are not due ANY compensation and even mentioning it your thread will annoy many.

These things are normally closer to home thn you think, who has access to your PC, where do you store passwords etc?

Well I wasn't expecting such hostility here.

I live on my own and my passwords are in my head.

You seem to be ignoring my main point which was why didn't I get told when my account was shut down so I could cancel my credit card ASAP.

Don't worry - I know where I stand on here. I won't bother you again.

You would have been told, which suggests now whoever has hacked you has access to your email account as well. Hackers tend to lay low, if they can get into your email they can read delete all emails from places like ebay/paypal or Amazon telling you that your password has been changed.

Therefore it may be that you have a bigger issue that just a closed Amazon account and I would suggest you wander over to the techie board and ask them to talk you through a sweep of your pC and a deep clean.

And you seem to be ignoring Hintza's point that if your Amazon account has been hacked, it is quite likely that the hacker changed your email address known to Amazon such that you would not receive anything that Amazon may have sent you.

Sorry, I don't see the hostility you mention.

What hostility has happened ? i cant see any, all i see is advice been given. Just because your passwords are in your head it doesn't mean they are safe as you can get hacked, keyloggers etc.

Oh and compensation, well you havent financially lost out have you ?
