what are the things that used to be free

I was with a friend this weekend and we went to get some bones from the butcher (cost us $1.79) for our dogs and we started talking about things that used to be free. I remember as a little girl my mom would send me down to the store to pick up dog bones and the butcher always gave them away for free. I would also stop by the bakery for the crust and heels of bread which was free so we could go to the local pond and feed the ducks and geese.

What things do you remember being free at one time that now you have to pay for?

We used to get a bag of salted and vinegared batter scraps for free from the chippy back in the days before colestrol and Gilly McKeith. I used to love batter scraps:o

not necessarily free but as a child my newsagent used to sell bundles of out of date comics for 2.5p. I used to buy a bundle on my way to school and read them under the desk :D

  • My OH's grandmother told us that they used to use the phrase "they'll have us paying for the water next". It was once such a crazy concept - the equivalent of us paying for the air.

  • I lived in Blackpool as a child...just around the corner from a rock factory.
If you stood at the open door for long enough, some kind soul would always give you a bag of broken rock.
Mmmmm...just remembering the smell of all that lovely fresh rock, gives me a toothache!!!
