Couple of Quite Possibly Blonde Questions

Hi there

Couple of what might be quite possibly blonde questions ~ I have an ASUS laptop that thanks to some help from "Closer" :T is now running as fast as it ever has.

Question 1)

When running a defrag I see that that my "D DATA" drive has 106 GB space but only 7.28 GB is free.

I am not sure what is on there  and if the lack of space matters at all !

I have one folder called "83fa8f699cf26af0d245b1da" which has 2 things in it one called mrt.exe._p and one called mrtstub. This folder is 1.16 MB in size

the next folder is called "eea4eb352afe956355d2f0b6d75a20" one thing called "install" and some entries called Install.res(various numbers).dll, then there is a WINRAR file called vc_red and another thing (icon with wee pc screen and disc) called vc_red. This folder is 5.14 MB in size

Afrer that there is a folder called MY~PC it has two folders called BACK UP SET 2009-08-02, size 15.3MB & BACK UP SET 2010-09-29 which appears to be empty. Dates are meaningless.

Question 2, on my C Drive where everything is kept I have a music folder that has all my MP3 tracks saved, these have been imported onto my iPOD and I a have a folder appeared called iTunes Music with the same files.

Do I need to keep the the "My Music Folder, (I already have it backed up to an external drive) will iTunes still "sync" if I move it to free up space.

Question 3, if files I want to save onto a disc are over 700mb, can I save then with WINRAR and then save to disc ?

Thanks for any advice possible

d drive appears to contain backups, and possibly files for windows reinstallation.

a dvd holds 4.7GB, and may be more useful, if you have a lot of data, an external usb hard disk drive might be a good idea, or you could split them up into many discs

winrar is unlikely to compress music any further.

Run WinDirStat to see what is on your D: drive.

If you need help with analysis, you can post a screenshot.

Download WinDirStat and run it to see if there's anything you recognise in the D drive. It sounds as though it has data intended for backing up/restoring your Op Sys. Does the laptop have instructions on what to do to reload the OS from D? If you don't have these, having the backup set won't be much use to you....... they may be in a README file on C,,,,,

Depends on how you imported the files into iTunes - if you used the 'Add Folder to Library' option, iTunes adds LINKS to your mp3 data, but doesn't import the actual files into the iTunes library - which keeps the library smaller - but if you move the external folder, iTunes will lose the links. If you imported Files to Library, it adds the content to the library, and in this case, I think you can move the mp3s without affecting iTunes.
  • Many thanks, I have used the "add folder" method so will leave my mp3s alone.

I have the info that came with the laptop stored I will check for back up details. It just seemed odd all the space was nearly used up.

    Thanks
