Insects in unopened 5kg bag of Tesco basmati rice

I've just taken a big bag of basmati rice (still sealed) from my cupboard to refill the airtight jar that I put them in ready for use. It is full of dead insects and the packet hasn't been opened. Expiry date is 2013. Really don't fancy using the rice in there (although I hear that insects are a good source of protein lol). What should I do? This is a large 5kg bag of rice and I want to throw it out but will Tesco refund me if I ring them and tell them? Ugh, so disgusting.

  • Take it back to the shop. If you have your receipt then they will refund your money, if no receipt then they will do an exchange.
I complained about a bag of potatoes; I had they receipt but had thrown them away because most of them had gone rotten within the week, they gave me an exchange with which I was quite happy.

Yes I'm sure they will refund / replace. Nothing wrong with it anyway - you're going to wash and cook the rice before eating it presumably...? Plenty of insects were crawling all over it before it was harvested. How many times have you bought a lettuce and found a slug or fly in it? Just make sure you wash things before eating them.

If I wanted to eat dead insects I wouldn't be paying Tesco for the privilege, I'd simply go out into the street and find some.

Who's asking you to eat dead insects? Where do you think food comes from? A sterile laboratory?

They could start marketing it as a new meal for these austere times "rice surprise" (stir fry rice with free added protein).

Sure it wasn't Chinese "fly rice"
  • They are probably Weevils. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weevil They are regularly found in flour and other grain type foods. The eggs are laid in the food and later hatch, generally when the food hasn't been eaten in a time mannerly. The eggs will not do you any harm if you eat them and you probably won't even know you have eaten them.

Just take the rice back to Tesco, it's no big deal, although a bit icky!!!

Don't think they are these as they are much bigger and look like dead moths. Anyway there are about 20 of these dead !!!!!!s in the rice. Anyway, Tesco have kindly offered to collect the packet and refund me plus given me some vouchers so all ok. I just wish I knew what they were as curiosity (and the nerd in me) has got the better of me now.
