Me and OH are saving up for a Campervan and wont have enough for another year at least.
Want to start researching early and finding out the best places to look/avoid for buying an old VW Campervan.
Are dealers better or is it best to go down to plymouth/cornwall and get from there? We live in Bham.
Thanks

It depends on you.
If you can tell a good one from a bad one, trawl ebay, vw forums, camper forums, and travel the length of the country. But some are very bad.
If you can't a dealer is the best bet.0 -
Join some of the forums out there that specifically deal with VW campers.
That will give you a place to not only research what you want to know, but give you access to a wealth of knowledge and ability.0 -

Just buy a Mazda Bongo and enjoy not being on first name terms with the AA or RAC, enjoy arriving at your destination on time without a worry, enjoy everything working first time, modern brakes and an efficient engine, enjoy not worrying about the cost of repairs and of course enjoy knowing you didn't just buy your way into a VW lifestyle as part of a mid life crisis.
Or do buy a split screen camper, just make sure you've got the extra cash to keep it on the road.0 -
i know a painter spent a year getting one of these in to concourse condition for the owner but he used buckets of filler to achieve it
it was valued at £25,000 when all the bits were nailed back on
me?
i thought it was just an old welded up clonker and no way would i want one for jollies
billy bongo for me.........................0 -
The difference is you have to really want a bongo to buy one, as opposed a classic VW that you really don't want to be able to pass up buying one if you get the chance.
A good VW will run for another 50 years.0 -
The BIL has bought a 1973 VW camper thats undergoing a restoration (being done right).
It's what he's wanted all his days (as is probably the case with most classic VW camper owners) and the only concession he's been willing to make is that it wasnt a splitty he bought.
To suggest to him to buy a Bongo? If he'd just been looking for a camper, perhaps, but he wanted an old VW.0 -
I came home today and there was an orange one parked outside , with a phone number saying its for sale , not a split screen , rusty round the windows and stuff .
said to the wife and kids that'd do us , gave the number a ring , he wants 6,500 for it , i thought it would be about 2,000 .
Just looked on ebay , and surprised at how much they go for .
just saying.my favourite food is spare ribs0 -
this one may do you though , wont have to save up for too long......

A splitty in good condition will cost you an arm and a leg. T2 VW's are still made in Brazil and imported here new by a company called Danbury.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

There is someone on another thread that is trying to sell their old double decker bus, if you fancy a slight change on your theme. (Search under my user name as I've commented on their thread!):heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0
