Redundancy Pay...when you hold a second job..?

Hi,

I currently have two jobs...
first job I have had for 6years,
second just started two months ago.
The first job has a round of voluntary redundancy...

My questions...
  1. Am I entitled to the tax free redundancy pay even though I currently have a job?
  2. When can I rejoin the company without loosing that tax free redundancy pay?

Thanks for all help!

    1) Yes
    2) In principle, immediately. However some companies have a policy of not re-employing their employees who have taken voluntary redundancy as it is liable to upset existing employees who didnt take voluntary redundancy.

Now what stops someone being repeatedly made redundant and then reemployed as a means of paying tax free wages????

they'd need to be employed long enough to earn redundancy pay. If they're getting a weeks pay for every month they've worked there, they won't do too well if they keep being made redundant.

Many places pay more than statutory,

My last place did 2 weeks full pay per years service with a minimum of 4weeks.

The point is people could work for a company on say £20k and then get £30k redundancy tax free, then get reemployed a few weeks later, repeat.

This can be done legally if the redundancy and new job are genuine business needs.

BUT there is a good chance HMRC would investigate if it happend more than once or if the job normaly pays £50k and they noticed.

Technically the non renewal of a fixed term contract is redundancy so there is scope there for a bit of creative accounting
