removing points from licence

Options
Hi, I'm asking on behalf of my boyfriend, honestly! He already has 6 points on his licence for speeding but 3 of them are from August 2007 so he could get them removed, but hasn't got round to it. Anyway yesterday he got another fixed penalty notice.

My question is, when he sends off his licence for them to put on the new points, will they automatically take off the expired ones? We checked the DVLA website and it says that expired points are automatically removed when you sumit your licence to have other details changed, but it doesn't say if this includes when you get new ones put on.

Thought I'd check on here if anyone knew.

And yes, I know he should have learnt his lesson by now and I always remind him of it when we're in the car. I've had a clean licence for 15 years and remind him of that when he moans that I drive too slowly. I also remind him that he's in charge of something that could easily kill people... hopefully this time he'll learn his lesson.

  • He still needs to declare them to his insurance for 5 years so it might be a bit early to remove them.. Although according to http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/EndorsementsAndDisqualifications/DG_4022490 he'll need to apply for a new license.

Yes, points count for three years under totting up but stay on for an extra year. Whenever a licence is updated for any reason any points over four years old will be removed.

As for insurance companies requiring notice for five years, that is irrelevant, you are entitled to send off and have them removed when they are four years old or more.

But as Scheming_gypsy has already said in post 2, points dont get removed anymore unless you apply for a new licence at a cost of £20
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.
  • Thanks for the replies

I know that it says you have to pay £20 and send off to get them removed, BUT it also says if you get your licence updated they will remove expired points.

So what we want to know is (which isn't made clear by DVLA) is does getting more points added count as one of the reasons for updating? Ie will they take the expired ones off when they add the new ones?
