used cars for new drivers

hi

my 19 and 17 year old daughters have just passed their driving test within months of each other and are now both looking for a used car...apart from all the apprehension and worry from me of them actually driving! It seems to be a minefield out there....anyone else on here recently had their kids do the same and can advise on what type of car they got and how much the insurance was...just as a guidline really

the price range would be about £3-4000

thanks

You have to look at cars in the low insurance groups obviously less the ones that the boy racers choose (which conts out he Corsa unfortunately). Insurance wil be the real killer and yo can expect to pay 25% either side of £2k (perhaps a bit less for girls)

The the problem is teenagers get hung up on what is cool but you will probably need to stand firm on this one.

The Fiat Panda is great wee car but doesn't pass the coool test (for most of them) but is ideal, small Korean cars are normally quite cheap and low insurance.

  • Ford Ka, but depending on model and year, you may find a Peugeot 1007 cheaper to insure. Remember to add yourself as a named driver too.

Pre-2003 Micra or anything Korean. As others have said, insurance will be the killer, even with girls.

I found the cheap korean cars to be fairly steep to insure, Poor emissions also so anything from 2001 onwards
    maybe quite dear to tax.

    Pre 2001 car under 1549cc (i think) About £100 a year (ish).

Is £3 - 4k car and insurance or just the car? Each? One car or money shared between the 2 and 2 cars?

2 kids 2 policies i doubt theres anything left to buy a car with looking at the quotes i got.

My wife's Hyundai i10 cost £159 p.a fully comprehensive. It must be one of the cheapest cars on the road to insure.

I thought I had it tough when in the mid 1990s I was paid about £390 to insure for a ropey 16 year old Mini at age 18. I do sympathise with young drivers.

Kia Picanto would be worth considering, as is the Daewoo/Chevrolet Matiz (0.8 or 1.0 litre engine), Suzuki Alto/Swift 1.0, Hyundai Amica/i10. As already mentioned the pre-2003 Nissan Micra 1.0 (K11) is a good bet too.

My 18 yr old daughter bought a Ford KA for £750 in March and paid £1150 for 10 months insurnace with Diamond - this is the accelerator policy that gives one years NCB after 10 months.
Car had no tax and 6 months MOT - was MOT'd beginning of oct - just needed new wipers and new no plate where someone had driven into back of her a couple of weeks ago.
RAC for everything including home start and get home cover was about £30 using a quidco offer.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.
