building work in leasehold flat

Is is allowed to do some building work in a purpose built leasehold flat. Like changing bathroom enterance or merging a separate toilet with bathroom to make it big.
Do i require planning permission or is it something totally not allowed.

    you need to read the leasehold document. We aren`t allowed to make any opening bigger than 6" diameter without permission from the freeholder. It is stated in the document
  • Agree with Kittie - you need to check your lease very carefully. Usually any alteration works require the permission of the freeholder as well as any other permissions that may be necessary.
  • As a Conveyancing Solicitor ( http://www.rwco.co.ukI would confirm that it is VERY likely that the lease will require you to get consent from the landlord. Trouble is some landlords are nasty and grabbing and charge unreasonable admin fees for agreeing quite minor works. The fees get even more unreasonable if you do the work and THEN ask them!

    You may well also need to comply with the Building Regulations and should check this with the Council.
