There are plenty of PHI providers that will allow you you to include dividends. The low salary / dividend route has become common place, therefore insurance companies have changed their contracts to accomadate.
In the event of a claim most insurers would look at the previous 52 weeks pre disability income which could be salary/ dividends and beneifits in kind. (but not bank interest or rental income)
Unemployment cover is a no go as the small print says you cannot be in a position where you could influence your own redundancy!
General rule of thumb=
Short term - up to 12 months -Accident and Sickness insurance- benefits paid for up to 12 months
Long term Illness- PHI-benefit paid monthly to expected retirement date
Serious illness - Critical Illness cover- benefit paid as a one off lump sum
