File association problems?

My computer just had a 'funny turn'. After booting up, clicking on the desk top icons just brought up the recycle bin. I could only open programmes by right click and 'open'.
System restore would not restore.
Anyhow I got on the net and was looking for solutions - then I found my bookmarks when clicked on, were opening the wrong bookmark. Though again I could get into them by right click open.
So far, virus and malware scans have found nothing.
Anyhow, suddenly, everything seems to be working again. How odd!
I'm almost afraid to turn off in case I have problems when I switch back on.
Any idea what it could be?

There have been many instances of corruption of desktop icons in Windows, and corresponding "fixes" from MS which often involve editing the registry.

You don't say which version of Windows you have, so I can't point at a specific one, but if you do an internet search for "windows desktop icon problem microsoft support" you'll find plenty of links.

Thanks for the reply. I have windows XP. Sorry I didn't explain the problem very well. What was happening was I would click on a desk top icon and kept being taken to the recycle bin - as if I was permanently clicking on that. I reinstalled the optical mouse, gave it a clean etc then I saw a comment on the net that keyboards can cause that problem. Unplugged the usb keyboard and everything just fine. Tried plugging it into a different port but the same problem. I have a microsoft comfort curve 2000 keyboard and the problem occurs whether I operate it just plugged in or with the drivers (for all the functions) installed. So I think I'll just get a new keyboard.
    Cheers
